Abstract
The article discusses the characters of Scandinavian folklore, which are categorized as "underground people." We are talking about vettes, vittras, elves, huldras. Their relationships with mortals are usually twofold: on the one hand, supernatural beings help people, even often marry them; on the other hand, they violently take revenge if someone hurts. From the point of view of their functions, they are similar to the spirits of dead ancestors.
