ICHTHYOLOGICAL NOMINATION «MEŇ» (LOTA LOTA L.) IN THE SLAVIC LANGUAGES

Abstract
The current research touches upon a new attempt of etymologization of the Common Slavic nomenclatural unit «meň». The main complication for researchers is the absence of a pronounced motivation in the etymology of this ichthyonym in such an opened and complex system as the ichthyological terminology. The analyzed ichthyonym and its derivations are referred to the ancient period of the Slavic languages history. This causes argument in the linguistic circles over a possible loan-word from the Finno-Ugric languages. In this article we try to shatter the myth about any loans from the Uralic languages and to prove the Indo-European etymology of the nomination «meň».
